At Witness Theater Lab, we gather around three core pillars: Training, Creation, and Community. Together, these spaces help us grow as artists, disciples, collaborators, and human beings.
Training
Practice
Weekly | 90 minutes (Sundays - 2:30-4pm)
Starting September 13 (one year commitment encouraged)
Our core training and formation space.
-
Practice exists to build our theater community through theater games and exercises, physical work, and the simple act of being present in the room together. Along the way, we’ll challenge and encourage our relationships with God, ourselves, and one another. It’s a time to value both heavy and light. Practice emphasizes eye contact, the body, and breath, and includes elements of ritual. Each session includes individual exploration, partner exercises, group games, and ends with a brief reflection in a circle. This kind of work will make you a “better” actor, yes, but it will also serve to make you a more grounded, present, generous, relaxed and ready human, acquainted with the practice of sharing weight, and willing to linger just a little longer in a moment with someone. When you come to Practice, know that your presence is valued. You affect the room. Also know that you always have a choice and are free to say no to any exercise or invitation. All that being said, aspects of the culture of Practice - its norms, language, and traditions - will ultimately be shaped by those who gather.

Practice is modeled after Wheaton College Arena Theater’s Workout. Workout is a program that began in 1974 under the leadership of Jim Young. The name Workout reflects its dual purpose: training as actors (“the actor’s workout”) and training as followers of Christ. It echoes Philippians 2:12: “Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” The heart behind Practice is much the same, and many of its rhythms are drawn from Workout, though it is not intended to be a replica. Why “Practice”? Because both acting and spiritual formation are lifelong endeavors. Through repeated, embodied participation, we grow in skill, presence, and love.
Creation
Fall Scripture Project
Two 90 minute rehearsals a week (at Arts Mission Oak Cliff)
Mid-September - mid-December 2026
Together we will memorize passages of Scripture and collaboratively create an original performance using the elements of theater.
-
For this collaborative project, we will begin the semester by individually memorizing different passages of Scripture. As the weeks unfold, we will listen for themes, images, and connections that emerge between them, gradually weaving the passages together into a simple and meaningful performance. Along the way, we may incorporate movement, music, lighting, props, costume pieces, and other theatrical elements to help bring the text to life. No audition required. Being a member of Practice is encouraged but not required.
Spring New Work Project
Two 90 minute rehearsals a week
Mid-January - mid-May 2027
A collaborative laboratory for creating new theater through conversation, improvisation, and play.
-
This project could be about anything. What are we wondering about? What questions do we want to ask? What stories do we feel drawn to tell?
Together, we will explore the process of ensemble-devised theater—a collaborative form of theater-making in which the performance is created by the group rather than beginning with a finished script. Through conversation, improvisation, writing, movement, research, and play, we will generate material and discover what wants to emerge.
The final piece might take the shape of a traditional narrative, or it may be more thematic, poetic, and image-driven. Along the way, we will use a variety of ensemble exercises and engage in rich discussion as we create an original work together from the ground up.
No prior devising or theater experience is necessary—only curiosity, openness, and a willingness to participate. No audition required. Being a member of Practice is encouraged but not required.
